Study day
Vices and virtues of animal models
The extensive use of animal models in contemporary biological and medical sciences has already been the subject of numerous analyzes in the philosophy of science (Shelley, 2010; Ankeny and Leonelli, 2020), as in the field of sociological studies of science (Nelson, 2018). But the question of the scope and the limits of these models , that of the adequacy of these analyzes to models less studied or very recently appeared, can still be raised.
In this study day, we will compare the point of view of researchers who use these models and that of those who offer epistemological and historical analyzes.
The following questions will be specifically addressed:
-
What makes an animal model a good model ?
-
What are the questions about animal models that are cross-cutting and recurrent from one field of research to another? ?
-
Are there specific difficulties in the case of animal models of emotions and mental pathologies?
